Port Washington, NY – This summer, E1 Entertainment brings family entertainment home again with two classic stories of love, friendship and perseverance. 1977 Emmy® award winner MARY WHITE stars Ed Flanders (“St. Elsewhere,” "Salem’s Lot") as real life journalist William Allen White who reflects on his short time with his 16 year old daughter, played by Kathleen Beller (“Dynasty,” The Godfather-Part II). Based on the children’s novel by Ouida, 1960’s A DOG OF FLANDERS stars David Ladd (Misty, The Wild Geese) and Donald Crisp (Pollyanna, How Green Was My Valley) about an impoverished boy and his grandfather, and the abandoned dog that teaches them hope. MARY WHITE and A DOG OF FLANDERS come to DVD on July 21 for the family-friendly price of $14.98SRP each.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and newspaper owner William Allen White lost his beloved 16-year-old daughter Mary when she was killed in a horseback-riding accident in 1921. The grieving father celebrated his daughter’s life with a newspaper editorial in the small Emporia Gazette. The heart-felt column gained widespread notoriety, way beyond White’s hometown of Emporia, Kansas, and became the basis of the made-for-TV film, MARY WHITE. In the film, White reflects on his last year with Mary in the social context of the time, as both father and daughter fight against racial segregation and in favor of Women’s Suffrage.
The 19th century children’s novel A Dog of Flanders is based in Belgium, but the universal story is loved the world over. Though there have been many film adaptations, this theatrical release directed by Academy Award® nominee James B. Clark (Flipper, My Side of the Mountain) is most well-known. In A DOG OF FLANDERS, Nello (Ladd) and his grandfather (Crisp) live a poor, unhappy life, until they find a wounded dog by the side of the road. They care for their new “friend,” who recovers and gives Nello the hope to pursue his dream of becoming
an artist.
