Port Washington, NY – In 1999, A RATHER ENGLISH MARRIAGE swept the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, with wins in the Best Drama, Best Editing, Best Original Music and Best Actor categories. The drama aired in the U.S. on PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre, garnering praise from critics who deemed the television production “outstanding,” (New York Times) and the acting by Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay “remarkable,” (Boston Globe). This April, E1 Entertainment brings the bittersweet tale of class, friendship and old age to DVD for the first time. A RATHER ENGLISH MARRIAGE will be available in stores April 7 for $24.98SRP.
Based on the 1992 novel by Angela Lambert, A RATHER ENGLISH MARRIAGE was adapted for the BBC by the prolific, Emmy®-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies, whose works include box office hits Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and the acclaimed British drama series “House of Cards,” “Vanity Fair,” “Sense and Sensibility” and “Bleak House.”
Golden Globe® -winning actor Finney (The Bourne Ultimatum, Erin Brockovich) delivers a brilliantly sympathetic performance as Squadron Leader Reggie Conyngham-Jervis, an upper-crust ladies' man and ex-fighter pilot. Courtenay (The Golden Compass, Nicholas Nickleby) is Roy Southgate, a retiring and obsessively decent ex-milkman. The two are as unlikely to cross paths in life as could be. But after their wives die in the same hospital on the same day, they decide to become roommates in Reggie's mansion. Friendship blooms, in an odd way, until Liz (Joanna Lumley of "Absolutely Fabulous") chances into the picture to steal Reggie's heart -- or is it his bank account?
