13-year-old Benjie says he can stop using heroin any time he wants to. But why would he want to give up something that makes him feel so good, so relaxed, so tuned out? Faced with the pressures of adolescence and the harsh reality of growing up in the ghetto, Benjie doesn’t see anything worth tuning in for. School is a waste of time and his home life isn’t much better. All he wants is for someone to believe that he’s more than a teenage junkie in this powerful and uplifting drama which tackles the battles of a troubled youth, his struggles with addiction, and the impact felt by those around him.
In addition to Tyson and Winfield, the film also stars young actor Larry B. Scott in his debut in a “phenomenal” (Playboy) performance which led to roles in The Karate Kid and in the Revenge of the Nerds series. Actress Helen Martin (Kiss the Girls, Bulworth) turns in a memorable performance as “Mrs. Bell” and the film was directed by Emmy® winner and Oscar nominee Ralph Nelson (Lilies of the Field, “Studio One”).
