Port Washington, NY– Continuing the celebration of culturally and historically significant productions from the Golden Age of Television, KOCH Vision and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announce the DVD debut of WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN?, 50 years after the drama originally aired on television. WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN? is the newest release under The Archive of American Television Presents line, a product of the newly-formed collaboration between KOCH Vision and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “What Makes Sammy Run?” first aired in two parts in 1959 as part of the “NBC Sunday Showcase” and starred Tony award-winning Broadway actor Larry Blyden (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) as title character “Sammy Glick.” The DVD arrives in stores for the first time ever on February 10 for $24.98 SRP.

Based on the best-selling 1941 novel by author and screenwriter Budd Schulberg (On the Waterfront, The Harder They Fall), “What Makes Sammy Run?” caused a sensation when the “NBC Sunday Showcase” production originally aired. Audiences were enthralled with the character Sammy Glick, a Jewish boy born in the ghetto of New York's Lower East Side who decides to climb the ladder of success by any means necessary. In Sammy’s world, “convictions are for sale” and through backstabbing and double-crossing, Sammy fights to become the industry’s top screenwriter in this rags to riches story of a hustler navigating the “dog eat dog” world of 1930’s Hollywood.

Adapted for television by Budd Schulberg, “What Makes Sammy Run?” also stars two-time Golden Globe winner John Forsythe (“Dynasty,” “Charlie’s Angels”), Golden Globe winner Norman Fell (“Three’s Company”), Dina Merrill (Operation Petticoat, Butterfield 8) and longtime television actress Barbara Rush (“7th Heaven”).

To the complete, digitally-restored masterpiece, KOCH Vision includes commentary from stars Dina Merrill and Barbara Rush, as well as a bonus interview with Budd Schulberg. Also included is a 16-page booklet with written contributions on the legacy of “Sammy” by the Archive of American Television and Jane Klain, Manager of Research Services at the Paley Center for Media.
