When the fragile democracies of France and Britain find themselves in a standoff with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, another devastating European war seems inevitable. Yet, despite the political and social upheaval, it seems to be business as usual in the world of Italian cinema, as producer Davide Rieti (Molina) and the Hungarian director Lazlo Molnar are working to finish the high-budget Tosca for Mussolini’s Cinecittà Studios. Sporting a multi-national cast, the film features as Tosca the beautiful German actress Kristina Baumgarten (Catherine McCormack; 28 Weeks Later, A Sound of Thunder, Braveheart) who, despite the heated political environment, ends up falling in love with her English co-star, James Clavel (Pryce).
While both stars desperately try to escape reality by living “inside” the movie, real life intrudes as the shoot is interrupted when the banks withdraw backing following the outing of the relationship between Rieti, a Jew, and the gifted young heartthrob Renzo Daviero (Rupert Friend). Italian fascist police and brownshirt thugs also interrupt the production looking for any excuse to cause trouble. Against all odds – and before sunrise and the beginning of the war -- the cast and crew unite in an attempt to complete the film in just one night. Can they possibly succeed? Will they get out of Italy before it’s too late?
