Set amongst Manchester’s legal community, NEW STREET LAW follows the exploits and cases of two rival barristers’ chambers with different attitudes towards justice. In Season Two, head of the defense chambers, Jack Roper (Hannah), has thrown his life into turmoil after his single-minded pursuit of the truth has left him facing a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Accused of fabricating a defense for his client, Jack refuses to back down and not only jeopardizes his own career, but also the careers of everyone from his chambers when the news leaks out and work dries up.
Tensions elevate between Jack’s chambers and those of the prosecution, headed by his one-time mentor, Laurence (Paul Freeman), much to the annoyance of Laurence’s daughter and former colleague, Laura (Faulkner). Relations become more complex between Charlie Darling (John Thomson) and his wife, Tessa (Susie Amy), as well as between Jack and Laura, who can no longer resist their mutual attraction.
Written by Matthew Hall, a 38-year-old former criminal barrister, NEW STREET LAW gives genuine and thought-provoking insight into the workings of the British legal system and is a must-see for any fan of television courtroom drama. In response to Season One’s DVD release this past January, Time Out Chicago said “with shows like Boston Legal infusing quirk into the courtroom, it’s refreshing to catch a series that’s comfortable scaling it back, letting the nuanced characters speak for themselves.”
