After Stephen Sorrell, a decorated World War I hero, returns from the front, he’s deserted by his wife and forced to raise his infant son. To make matters worse, he loses a promising job offer and is forced to take work as a menial hotel porter. Soon, both his dignity and health are damaged irreparably from the exhausting labor and harsh treatment he receives on the job. Sorrell, however, thrives in the knowledge that his young son will eventually benefit from his labors. But after Kit’s mother returns, attempting to re-enter the young man's life, Sorrell, who has allowed the boy to believe her dead, is forced to make some hard decisions.
Deeping's touching and poignant tale has all the ingredients of a classic family saga, spanning two decades of tragedy and joy. Called “a refreshing reminder of kindness, compassion [and] self-sacrifice” by The New York Times, the 2-DVD set features all six episodes of the critically acclaimed mini-series.
