Port Washington, NY – The gripping drama and romance of the epic mini-series DRESDEN captured the attention of European audiences and critics alike when it first aired in 2006, winning the German Television Award for Best Mini-Series. DRESDEN stars German actress Felicitas Woll (Girls on Top, “Berlin, Berlin”), who won the Bavarian TV Award for her role as Anna Mauth, and English actor John Light (The Lion in Winter, Partition) as Robert Newman – fictional characters caught up in a romance complicated by an all too real war.
January 1945. In the fateful days leading up to the Allied bombings of Dresden, Anna, a German nurse, is fighting to save the lives of wounded soldiers. She is so consumed by her work that she hardly even thinks about her forthcoming engagement with the ambitious young surgeon, Alexander (Benjamin Sadler). One day, Anna finds a soldier hiding in the hospital basement. Assuming he is a German deserter, she keeps quiet. When she learns that he is a British pilot who was shot down, she realizes that she loves him too much and cannot betray him. As British bombers begin their attack on Dresden, Anna discovers the true nature of her fiancé Alexander and risks her life to save Robert. Meanwhile, a catastrophic fate descends upon the doomed city.
Boasting Germany’s largest made-for-TV production budget ever, DRESDEN is the first depiction of the Allied bombing of Dresden in a fictional framework and set viewing audience records during its domestic broadcast. Bolstering the mini-series’ authenticity, the filmmakers used locations in and around Dresden and incorporated the latest historical findings of both British and German scholars in order to illuminate both the situation in Dresden and the strategies of the Allied forces. DRESDEN is presented in two-parts with English and German (subtitled in English) dialog. DVD bonus features include an in-depth making-of featurette that goes behind the scenes with the cast and crew and stunning archival military newsreel footage of the actual Dresden bombings.
